Troubadours of the Folk Era - Volume 1
This well engineered Rhino reissue is the best single disc compilation of this era, with some of the tracks being unavailable elsewhere on CD.  The enclosed booklet includes a brief history of the Great Folk Scare. This Volume features mostly solo artists. There is also a Volume 3 featuring groups (Volume 2 seems to be out of print, unfortunately).

Folk Classics: Roots of American Folk Music
Another good one volume collection. This one covers the period of 1935 through 1967, and as such also provides an  introduction to many of those who influenced the Folkniks such as: Leadbelly, Pete Seeger, the Carter Family, and Burl Ives.

The Original New Folks
Early recordings of those who went on to become legends, plus some who didn't.  A must-have for collectors, as this album has several tracks not available elsewhere on CD from such artists as Jackie Washington, Hedy West, and The Greenbriar Boys..

Generations of Folk, Vol. 2: Protest & Politics

The Best Of Broadside: 1962-1988
"In 1962, Sis Cunningham and Gordon Friesen began publication of Broadside, a topical song magazine that quickly would help to start a national movement. After the Cold War 50s, a social, cultural, and political revolution was in the air. Broadside began publishing hundreds of            songs of social dissatisfaction by musicians who later became the leading lights of the folk and protest movements. Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Tom Paxton, Pete Seeger, and dozens more all had their songs first published in Broadside.
This five-CD set is a marvelously comprehensive document of the magazine's songs and songwriters, all of whom were recorded by Folkways Records. The lyrics of each song are printed and extensive information is given about the context in which the song was created.
Background material is provided on all of the songwriters, too."
The collection includes rare tracks by "Blind Boy Grunt" (actually Bob Dylan) and "Blind Girl Grunt" (Janis Ian).  It even includes the notorious, unbroadcast "Plastic Dashboard Jesus", often requested but soon banned by coffeehouse managers under pressure of complaints.

Friends of Old Time Music: The Folk Arrival 1961 - 1965 [BOX SET] [LIVE]
<>From 1961 to 1965, New York City's trailblazing Friends of Old Time Music presented 14 concerts that brought dozens of legendary traditional musicians before city audiences for the first time. This "folk arrival" changed the course of American folk music, expanding the vision of the Folk Song Revival and leaving an indelible mark on the musical landscape. For Friends of Old Time Music, Peter K. Siegel, who personally recorded most of the concerts, handpicked 55 tracks from the original master tapes. They include the first concert appearances by Doc Watson, Roscoe Holcomb, and Joseph Spence, and the triumphant return visits to New York by Dock Boggs and Mississippi John Hurt.  3 CDs of live concert recordings, 55 tracks (53 previously unreleased), accompanied by a richly illustrated 60-page book

Fire at Club 47
For hard-core fans of the Folk Scare Era only.  This unique CD was originally recorded one night in 1960 at the famous Club 47 (now Club Passim) in Cambridge, Mass.  The informal recording method originally used places this CD a notch below the others on this page in sound quality, but it is high in historic interest.  You'll hear early performances by those who would become famous such as Joan Baez, Tom Rush and Jim Kweskin.  You'll also hear performers that are hard to find on CD now such as Jackie Washington, and some you probably never heard of (such as Debbie Green who taught Joan Baez how to play guitar).  Available only from the publisher.  Here's another review.

Anthology Of American Folk Music
This newly remastered six-CD (three volume) box set is a reissue of the six-LP set compiled by folk archivist Harry Smith in 1952. Some of the many artists influenced by this collection of field recordings from the '20s and '30s are Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Jerry Garcia, Joan Baez and Peter, Paul & Mary. ANTHOLOGY contains a 100-page booklet that incorporates Smith's original annotations, archival photos, graphics and testimonials by well-known musical figures including Elvis Costello, Dave Van Ronk and Eric von Schmidt. The final disc of this 6 CD set contains a multimedia portion which provides a hypertext essay of images, text, and additional information.  Not recorded in the Folk Scare era, but included here because of its pervasive influence on the Folkniks. New 5/24/00 - a Volume 4 is now available.

Songs For Political Action
This Bear Family 10-CD with book boxed set has a rather steep price. But it's a good choice for the serious collector as it documents much of the political folk music from the 40's through the early 60's and includes an informative history.

Bleecker Street - Greenwich Village in the 60's
This is actually a fine tribute album, I didn't know where else to list it.  "A tribute to the 1960's folk scene in Greenwich Village, New York, Bleecker Street features sixteen of today's folk and rock artists performing classic folk songs."
