HOW TO MAKE PRE-VISTA APPLICATIONS WORK
IN WINDOWS VISTA AND WINDOWS 7
First,be sure you
are loged as Administrator
After installing the Application
((ignore any notice that it might not have installed correctly),
but preferably before running it for the first time:
In Windows Explorer, find the
Application.
Right click on it and choose:
Create shortcut.
On shortcut created, right
click and choose: Send to | Desktop.
Left click on shortcut on
desktop (if necessary, right click on taskbar and choose: Show
the desktop).
Right click on shortcut and
choose: Properties.
In Shortcut tab, make sure
"Start in" shows where the data files should be. For CD Czar the
default is: "C:\Program Files (x86)\CDCzar"
Then in the Shortcut key field,
tap the first letter of the Application, or whatever key you
want to use to bring up the Application.
In the Security tab, click on
yourself as Administrator, then if necessary click Edit to Allow
all of the first 6 Permissions. Click OK.
In the Compatibility tab, in the
Compatibility mode box, select Windows XP and check the "Run
this program in compatibility mode for:" box.
Also check the box in Privilege
Level.
Click Apply, then click the
"Change settings for all users" and do the same things there.
Click on OK. and from now on, to
bring up your Application just hold down the ctrl and alt keys
while tapping ONCE the key you chose above for the Shortcut key
field. Of course, you could instead just double click on
the shortcut (or single click, then right click and choose
Open). But always open by using the desktop shortcut,
don't pin to the Taskbar or Start menu.
While you're at it, see Control
panel | Folder options - you may see items you want to change,
such as showing file extensions!
Microsoft has a migration tool (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Transfer-files-and-settings-from-another-computer)
that I haven't had time to look at yet.
