WHO
WE ARE
Founded in 1991 as Cooperative Education Services, Gateway
employs state-certified teachers with a special commitment to
serving students who, for a variety of reasons, are struggling in
school. Gateway also enlists parents, classroom teachers, school
support personnel, and, in some cases, community agencies to help
students succeed.

Executive Director Jim Nelson has devoted more than thirty years to
education as a classroom teacher, tutor, workshop presenter, and
supervisor. In the early 1980s he began to focus on learning
disabilities, which led him to pursue specialized training in reading
and language instruction. He taught the first Project Success
classes for middle school students who didn’t qualify for special
education services in the Highline School District. As a
member
of the International Dyslexia Association since 1982, Jim has
attended several national and regional conferences to stay current with
trends in this developing field.
